Glass rain repellent: how it works and how to apply it properly

A rain repellent is one of the easiest coatings to sell: the client sees the effect in the first rain. It is also one of the easiest to get wrong — on glass, preparation matters more than the product itself.

How it works

A hydrophobic glass coating forms an invisible layer of 10–15 nm. KRYTEX MEGA GLASS keeps 99.9% light transmission and gives a 118.5° contact angle: rain no longer spreads into a film but gathers into drops. From about 60 km/h the airflow blows them off the windshield, so at speed the wipers are needed less often.

What the driver gets

  • Clearer visibility in rain and snow — water, dirt and ice hold on less.
  • Up to 60% less fogging.
  • Up to 10× less washer fluid and up to 5× longer wiper blade life.
  • Less contamination and much easier cleaning.

The coating lasts 6–9 months. At 1–2 ml/m², a 50 ml bottle treats about 3–5 cars.

Preparation: the step that decides the result

Glass that looks clean usually is not: water spots and mineral deposits block the coating from bonding. Clean the glass with KRYTEX OPTIC, a pH-neutral cleaner with a fine mineral abrasive that works by hand, without a machine. The test is simple: rinse the glass — if water forms an even, unbroken sheet, it is clean; if it breaks into patches, repeat. Then wipe with KRYTEX DEGREASER.

Application step by step

  1. Remove the main dirt from the glass with a wash or a damp microfiber.
  2. Remove water spots with KRYTEX OPTIC and check the water sheet.
  3. Degrease with KRYTEX DEGREASER.
  4. Apply two layers on the windshield and on a rear window with a wiper, one layer on other glass. Leave 10–15 minutes between layers.
  5. Apply the first layer in circular motions, the second in straight lines. Keep 1–3 cm from the edge, then treat the edge last.
  6. Wait at least 40 minutes after the last layer — there is no upper limit — and buff off thoroughly.

Work at 15–25 °C and no more than 60% humidity, out of direct sunlight and away from water.

Headlights too

MEGA GLASS is also used on headlights: dirt and water hold on less, which helps keep them clean between washes.

For studios

A rain repellent works well as an add-on to any paint coating or film job: it takes little time and the client notices it at once. KRYTEX supplies MEGA GLASS together with OPTIC and DEGREASER, so the full glass process comes from one supplier. Request terms for your studio or region.
